Get ready for attic insulation with a clear access route, completed prerequisite work, household arrangements and the installer’s project-specific instructions.

Before spray-foam installation, get written instructions for the exact product and project. Ask who must leave, how the work area will be isolated and ventilated, and who will tell you when occupants and pets may return. There is no single re-entry time that applies to every foam installation.
The installation appointment is only one part of the schedule. Preparation, ventilation, cleanup and the return of other trades or occupants also need to be planned.
Request the manufacturer and product name, current technical instructions and relevant safety information. Confirm that the contractor’s occupancy instructions match the proposed product and application. A time quoted for a different product or a neighbor’s project is not a substitute.
The EPA’s archived ventilation guidance explains that application emissions and cleanup require control, and that appropriate reoccupancy timing depends on factors including formulation, mixing, ventilation, temperature and humidity. Use current manufacturer instructions for the actual job.
Ask the contractor to identify the work area and the spaces subject to access restrictions. Discuss adjacent occupied rooms, shared areas and other contractors who might arrive during the work. If the property is multifamily or commercial, involve the person responsible for building access and occupant communication.
Also ask how HVAC operation and air openings will be handled during the project, who controls those steps and when normal operation may resume. Do not improvise a ventilation arrangement yourself.
Plan lodging, work and pet care around the written instructions. Avoid booking another trade based on an assumed finish time until the installer confirms the sequence.
Retain the product identification, installed scope, occupancy instructions and the contractor’s contact details. If something about the completed work concerns you, contact the installer and manufacturer rather than using odor alone to decide whether an area is ready for occupancy. Seek medical advice for health symptoms or concerns.
Time’s spray-foam insulation page is a starting point for discussing the service. When you contact us, explain whether the property is occupied, which areas need insulation and whether residents, pets or other trades require special coordination. Resolve the product and occupancy plan before confirming the work date.
